'Faith' inspired by religious upbringing

Issue date: 4/25/08 Section: Senior Projects
A hit man performing the will of God was the subject of "Faith," a fictional film created by Aaron Ranck for his senior project presented Wednesday. Ranck, a film and video production major, says his religious upbringing was the inspiration for writing the film, where he became interested in the extraordinary impact religion had on peoples' lives.
The short's main character, Vincent, is deeply religious, however feels abandoned by God, and thus kills in accordance to a man who claims he can speak to the lord. A man Vincent has never seen.
Ranck's style was to combine the conventional methods of a narrative story line with his newfound passion of film noir, employing shadowy figures, surrealism, the traditional voice-over, and unorthodox camera shots.
Ranck added jokingly "If you break a film rule, say it's an "experimental film""
One of the main conflicts of the film was the blurred distinction between good and evil. Although Vincent is the protagonist, the distinction becomes difficult when revealed the fact that he is a killer, even though he believes he is doing what God wishes of him.
The film was made using an original script from Ranck, and shot entirely in Forest Grove using students as actors. The clip shown during the presentation featured Vincent praying in a dark, gothic church followed by a brutal murder.
"Faith" will be shown in full Wednesday, May 7 in the Milky Way.
