History has shown us that soldiers were men; covered in army fatigues, dirty face, clean bull cut. But according to Jennifer Mendoza's senior thesis, this image has changed.
Standing with an American flag as the background on her presentation, Mendoza recited the history behind the liberation and inclusion of women in the armed forces. Mendoza's presentation was for her major in Politics and Government.
Mendoza's primary focus for the presentation was the different reasons behind the change in sentiment surrounding women in the military. The original reason behind women being incorporated into the military was considered a shortage of qualified men and advancement in weapon technology. According to Mendoza, the equaling of the gender roles is a key reason that women have become progressively more included in military activities.
Mendoza's presentation was filled the images and flyers that promoted and informed the public of these changes. One such flyer displayed a man sitting with a woman, both adorned in military clothing, the man saying, "Wow, I didn't know you were strong enough to do a man's job!" This presentation was filled with images that would shock today's society but are an accurate portrayal of most public sentiment at the time.
