There is a photo of a woman at her most peaceful, her back facing the camera. It shows a Pacific senior working in her art studio--mixed media supplies and images scattering the scene.

This image of Christie Norbury opened her senior project presentation Wednesday morning in the Library Conference Room.

Assistant Human Resources Director, Norbury has balanced a full-time career with her studies as an art major at Pacific.

As a working mother and a member of Pacific staff, Norbury said her time as a non-traditional student has been riddled with the challenge to hold a full-time job; the drive to do well academically at a university where she is well known; the struggle to balance her professional and student identities.

Her focus to challenge herself in so many dimensions provides her artwork with insight backed by a passion for learning.

"The things that drive my creativity mostly come from observations I make, the things I read, the things I study, and the people I meet," said Norbury in her artist's statement.

Norbury's search for meaning bleeds into her art exhibit, "The Sorting out of the Sacred and the Profane," which opened Wednesday with the Senior Show. In the exhibit, varying religious and spiritual philosophies layer each other in juxtapose--jumbling context and creating irony through contrast.

Her artwork questions religion, being, spirituality, and the definitions of sacredness and profanity. It simultaneously tells stories of Norbury's personal spiritual journey and the broader world view.

"She has worked harder [than other students]," said Patricia Cheyne, associate professor and the department chair of art. "In class she always took everything to the next level--she brought a whole different aspect to the investigations."

The Senior Show will continue in the Kathrin Cawein Gallery and Scott Hall through May 17.
