With a record number of votes cast during Pacific University Undergraduate Council's Elections, Lindsey Costley has been elected President for the 2008-2009 academic year.

PUCC allows students to develop leadership opportunities and professional growth while catering to the Pacific community.

While PUCC grants scholarships for student study abroad opportunities and finances events and guest lecturers on campus, they have recently endorsed the Cascade Climate Declaration adding Pacific as the ninth college to aid in the action against global warming.

PUCC also holds Dr. Phil Forums allowing students to have dialogue with the President voicing their concerns and questions.

Although attendance is lacking at the forums, this election held the most total votes than any in the past. The highest in the past was 390. Last year fewer than 200 people voted, but this year a total of 460 students voted through the online process.

Assisting Costley on the Executive Board is Vice President Rochelle Schwartz, Budget Authority Kathryn Watson, and student representatives are Tyler Atwood and Austyn McPherson.

The position of secretary is decided by the President. Currently, Costley is looking for students that show interest and focus and hopefully the position will be filled by the end of April. Costley said, "My main thing is that they need to be dependable, because we need this person to be at every meeting, they need to be organized in order to complete the minutes, their sub-committees, and their school work."

The Executive Council consists of the elected members as well as the freshman student representative who is elected in the fall.

Costley said that since the board is compiled with a majority of upperclassmen, she hopes that the freshman representative will be a strong leader and voice for the new class through their transition.

Advisor to PUCC, Steve Klein, mentioned transforming PUCC within the next 2-3 years. The Student Senate will follow the same principles of PUCC but the student representations will increase from the current 12 to between 20-25 students.

Currently, a student representative from the Board of Trustees, Resident Housing Association, InterGreek Council, and the Student Athletic Advisory Council serves during the meeting but do not have voting power. Costley said, "The Student Senate can truly appeal to the voice of the students."

The additional representatives will cover a wider population of the student body.

Klein said, "The general student population probably doesn't realize or maybe even understand all the work the students provide on PUCC." Now that the election is over, Klein is confident in the new officers to make the university a better place. He said, "That right there is the magic."
