No equal access for Boxer

I have noticed around campus, and on Facebook, that there seems to be a need (or a want) for what's termed as "Equal Boxer Access." I would like to state no offense to whoever thought of this idea, but it is stupid. The whole entire point of Boxer isn't to "give equal access" to whomever wants it that day.

The entire point of Boxer is to have it, to have the symbol of school pride, to have the embodiment of the university within that bronze statue. It's a symbol of not only pride in the university, but pride in yourself and what you have accomplished due to the university.

A long time ago, it used to be that even a flash of Boxer could incite people gossiping. It used to be that at sporting events, one would look around to see if the group would "flash" Boxer, as a way to instill pride in our players and maybe, just maybe, pull out a win because of the symbolism that it carries.

Having "Boxer Competitions," that little quiz that Dean's putting together, or whatever, is nice to get your name out there, but it does nothing to increase school spirit.

You can recite school history until you're blue in the face, but none of that helps increase school spirit. It can only be found from within, from feeling pride for your school to feeling pride for your accomplishments.

Start showing some damn school spirit, Pacific University! Go to our athletic games, help out around our community, volunteer at local charities, show some love to your neighbor, do something to show you give a crap about your university!

Boxer is a symbol of what you do as a student, as a professor, as an administrator, as a person at the university. The more spirit and energy you put into what you do, the more spirit you show, the more you care about the university, the more energy is put into Boxer. Boxer isn't for equal access.

It's for the most worthy of students, who love the university and what it symbolizes and want that all important symbol of their pride in the school. Do me proud, Pacific. Or not. The onus is on you.

Sincerely,

James Lettmore
