Future of Boxer depends on quiz

We've come a long way from the old days of the Boxer Toss.
Getting the Boxer used to be about beating the crud out of your fellow students in order to get that prized statue.
Now we're gently handing Boxer to whatever organization can prove they know all the facts about Pacific's mascot.
Times sure have changed.
But is this change for the better? We're not advocating violence, but a quiz just doesn't seem as high-stakes or exciting as some sort of physical competition.
The whole point of making a big deal of whoever gets the Boxer is to encourage school spirit. Having the Boxer should be something an organization is proud of because they knew they had to fight, in some way, to earn their prize.
There definitely is a drop in the level of spirit this school has for Boxer. Just ask any alum who was here even five years ago.
But maybe this quiz is a step in the right direction. It could be that we are just adapting to a society where people don't think it's acceptable to get bloody over a statue.
Or it's possible that this is just another example of a student body that doesn't care about anything other than getting their degree and getting out of here as fast as possible.
