Pacific garners grant for CLIC

Language center coming to Pacific University via grant

"It's hard to learn languages just from a textbook, you have to learn the culture too, and to do that [you need] an exchange … It's not financially possible to have everyone study abroad, but you can still get a little bit of that [experience] here," said Phillips.

A third grant made to the Panasonic Corporation is also waiting in the wings. The grant, which will be larger than the Collins Grant, is intended to be used to sustain the CLIC once it's up and running.

A full-time lab technician (who is yet to be hired) with experience in second language acquisition and technology use will be available for help at all CLIC hours.

"I'm very excited, because I think that the students will really benefit from the environment that [the CLIC] will provide," said Whitney Snipes, a Spanish language major who was directly involved in the acquisition of the Collins grant, "[including] the community, the unity, and the common interest."

"If you go to Strain, everyone's into sciences. If you go to the CLIC, everyone [will be] interested in languages," she said.
