"Usually when you do this sort of thing you have several choices, not just one. They basically gave it to us and said, 'Here, what do you think?'" explained Timm.

Now the group has about three or four preliminary sketches to work with, mix and match and find what they like and don't.

For now, Pacific athletics are represented by a block P (see graphic). This is referred to as a secondary mark, or spirit mark.

Teams have begun to embrace the letter. It is embroidered on the new department jackets and on jerseys and practice clothing of several teams.

"We've gotten a lot of positive feedback about the secondary mark from faculty that have been around the department for awhile," said Timm.

The group hopes to unveil the new logo before school gets out in May, according to Timm.

The Boxer became the official mascot of Pacific by a vote by the student body in 1968. Pacific athletic teams before then used the Badger as their mascot.

"We're taking this as a great opportunity to redefine Boxer and modernize our logo," said Timm.
