Facilities Update
Baseball, softball waiting on fields
Issue date: 2/15/08 Section: Sports
The tennis teams aren't the only squads waiting on new facilities.
The baseball and softball teams are waiting on the completion of their new fields at the Lincoln Park Athletic Complex.
When the university broke ground on their new multi-million dollar project, it was estimated that the fields would be ready by Feb. 1.
"Obviously, the weather played a big role in the reason that the fields aren't ready yet," said Ken Schumann, director of athletics. "It's been raining since September, and the couple of weeks where it was sunny it was too cold to get any work done."
Baseball is scheduled to play their first game on the new Bond Field at Chuck Bafaro Stadium on March 4 against Corban in a non-conference meeting. Their first conference series is slated to take place March 8-9 as they host Pacific Lutheran.
Softball hosts Willamette on March 1-2 in their first games on their new field.
If the fields aren't ready, Schumann said the teams would find alternative sites, suggesting that softball would most likely flip-flop sites with Willamette and play the games in Salem.
Because Pacific Lutheran is a greater distance from Pacific, the baseball games would most likely be held at an alternative, neutral site.
"We'll be ready, but I believe the fields will be ready. I want the teams on the fields as soon as possible. I have every intention of having the fields ready for both team's openers," said Schumann.
